Electric Erosion

Electric Erosion creates a fictional electric biota. This installation utilizes mini joysticks, discarded speaker components, and various metals to form a seaside industrial wasteland that is continuously “reproducing” and “being eroded.” The main interactive interface of the installation is assembled from broken speaker cones and joysticks coated with conductive paint, inviting audiences to manipulate real-time changes in 24 speakers and visual effects through tactile and directional inputs. Selecting joysticks, a quintessential component of video game consoles, as materials for the interactive interface suggests a sometimes frivolous and hasty attitude toward interactions between human society and nature. The “reactions” of the electric biota are rendered through various randomization algorithms, enhancing the unpredictability and potential “risks” of the installation, presenting the complexity and uncertainty of human-nature interactions, and metaphorically reflecting the silence or resistance of the electric biota as a passive party.

The installation forms a mysterious human-like torso on the stairs, symbolizing the tangible impact of human technology on nature. Top lighting and an altar-like setup create a worshipful atmosphere, implying reflections on the idolization of technology in modern society. Meanwhile, the electric biota, as synthetic organisms, blurs the line between nature and artifice by replicating biological traits and demonstrating technological surveillance capabilities through their “observations.” This suggests that in our digital world, every interaction and piece of data is continuously recorded and analyzed. This setup aims to reflect the delicate balance between digital surveillance and personal privacy in contemporary society and explores how to maintain a real connection with nature in an increasingly digitalized and virtual world.

Through this subtle power relationship, the artist invites audiences to participate and experience an ecosystem that is both real and fictional, prompting deep reflection on the evolving world of technology, nature, and human interaction. The mutual gaze between the electric biota and the audience forms a unique dialogue, where each participant’s actions not only affect the installation’s sound and visuals but also impact the overall ecological balance.
